an idea that popped into my head the other day. wondering why super huge anti material rifles went fired from over the shoulder like a rocket launcher is.
i'll probably flesh this idea out more on an actual character using it - but right now i am just trouble shooting out the design the shells fired are chemically and magnetically accelerated discarding sabot rounds. so the rear portion explodes like a cannon shell - the recoil being mainly absorbed through the suspension system attached to the rear floating assembly. a magnetic coil system bring the round's speed up even further. round types could vary within the constrains of the sabot system of course. i envision a standard tungsten/DU dart, a heavier high impact round (think flipping a armored car with a broadside hit) or 3-4 smaller round for long range anti infantry buckshot. the optics system is housed on top of the barrel and contains all sorts of high tech stuff that i simply haven't thought of yet. essentially its image is transmitted via fiber optics into a high resolution screen (shown) or straight into an uplink in the user's eye/spine/scifi body modification. the backpack mounting arms stay ridged when the weapon is sensed being ready to fire but can float free with a degree of resistance otherwise. also, fine-tuning or limited take-over can be managed digitally through small motors and the steadying actuators. the remaining recoil is sent to the backpack unit which is transferred into both shoulders and hips while firing from a prone position. back to my bread and butter! Awesome concept. The level of drawn and written detail is amazing as always
For our sakes I hope none of your concepts get turned into actual weapons or we're all screwed -- [link] - My Comic It looks cool for sure.
Judging from the enormous size, however, and the huge content of it (railgun stuff as well as conventional barrel stuff), and the extra attachment mechanism with motors and all that, it must weigh extremely much and be generally very bulky. Seems like a better idea to have it vehicle mounted. Or if it must be crew served, like a tripod machinegun with different parts carried by different crew, then assembled where it's wanted (immobile whilst assembled). -- Warhammer 40,000 Macross Ghost in the Shell Love the backpack.
Love the two-stage chemical-magnetic concept. Your discarding sabot "carrier" could be mostly ferromagnetic materials, and the "dart" could be anything after that. Perhaps an aft venting nozzle a la Carl Gustav Recoilless is in order? And how about a transformer to take the power off the battery, step it up to extremely high voltages and store it in a big capacitor and for one big burst. Y'know, like those camera flashes that go WWWEEEEeeeeee e e e e e e... For stabilization, you could have a simple gyroscope motor. you spin the thing up and it resists changes in angular momentum. An extra trigger to accelerate and brake the gyro might not be a bad idea. -- DAcademy - Live drawing sessions More ideas:
Some ceramic components - maybe a bit of liquid nitrogen/helium to supercool the magnet? Also, check out how an MRI (those giant medical resonance imagers) works. Those have helium-cooled electromagnets that must be "ramped up" first and project a very powerful magnetic field. Entering a room with an MRI and coins in your pocket's a bad idea, so maybe antimagnetic cancellers could be added to the muzzle of the barrel. Not sure how those would work, but they're used to repel iron filings and ferromagnetic foreign objects from jumping into and fouling the gun when it's "ramped up". -- DAcademy - Live drawing sessions yeah... both of those are true, and it certainly could do those things. however i wanted it to be JUST big enough to be carried in by a shooter and spotter (spotter would carry another battery and more ammo)
even with all the weight distributed through the back, maybe some sort of low powered exo suit would be in order :/ -- -Contact me for commission info- -AIM: Legato895- -Email: commissions@michaelkingery.com- Unfourtunatly someone already has thought of it.
[link] The concept never seems to have taken off though and probably wont unless anti tank rifles start firing heavier rounds then the .50 |
