Done in the vain of “outlook”, “keep” was an attempt to get back into compositional traditional (or for that matter, digital) art. Over the past 3 days I’ve grinding on this, not including the few hours I spent trying to map the picture out in sketchbook pro.
Done almost completely using a .5mm mechanical pencil and blending stubs with only minor 6b and ebony touch ups as usual leveling can never get the same feel the real picture has, however, I think I gave it a good shot.
This picture was edited from the WIP version (in my scraps) using the fantastic help from you guys who got to it and my life-drawing teacher. Additions include darkening around the soldier, adding more gate debris, touching up on the dead guy on the right, adding more atmosphere and other such minor touch-ups
If I could change anything, it would probably be everything, but oh well, I learned allot and it was nice getting back into graphite… nothing beats grinding lead onto Bristol board to really etch out a shadow.
Its kinda saddening knowing that “outlook” has been my personal favorite deviation (and hence, my featured) for more than… 2 years? And I don’t know if this picture will change that.
Any compositional critique while still helpful in all honestly won’t be enacted on – but don’t be hindered if you need to say something.
Its taken me a long time to get the base group of people that I have watching me, but trust me, your constant encouragement and critique go well beyond the “OMG FAV” that other people are content with, and for that, I am thankful!
All edits will be noted, but i do plan to manipulate it a bit with photoshop after class!
***EDIT (keep 1.5)***
played around in photoshop and added a boarder as well as re-curved it. after a brief run with the clone tool, im starting to get crazy thoughts... like removing the spear soldier and his victim all together, but i don't know if the paper could hold up to it or if i would get a clean enough erasure.
***EDIT (Print Uploaded)***
for what its worth its not a print! might as well use my account!
Woah... Very awesome, indeed! Love the shading on this (and that huge fist coming out of nowhere is a great touch ). Wait... What is that thing? Neato sig on the shield.
You should come up some tutorials and sell them as DVDs or something... Haha, that'd be sweet.
(Thought I had commented on this... Gah... Memory-loss...)
i was wanting a giant troll or ogre smashing through the main gate, and wanted to give the impression that the battle has just changed sides... ultimately i really dropped the ball by including the spear guy killing the enemy soldier. if i would have left that out i think the picture would have been vastly superior :/
as for dvds, i think people would want to spend their money on dvd's made by a professional, not a random dude wanting to be one
awesomeness for traditional art!! Very nice contrasts with the values. its dark where it needs to be dark and light where it needs to be light. As was previously stated, it really captures the essence of a chaotic battle. The wood debris really adds to that fact. As far as the crits go, i wouldnt have ended the main guys, elbow oh so close to the border of the piece, cause it creates a real nasty tangent. It also seems that the wall on the left side of the main figure has a tad darker values than on the right side. another thing that would be cool would if the things that go forward toward us would have higher contrast in terms of value. For instance, the sword the main guy's holding - the lighter side - could be a lot lighter than its darker side. you can also play around with this with the receding arm holding the sword, in contrast to the sword itself. Very solid drawing, overall nice composition. I would love to see how you handle this in color, considering you have a great eye for value. I bet it would be a killer.
Just my 2 cents, i know how long and tedious it takes to produce this typa piece - i just felt i needed to say something worthwhile to read. Definitely faving this one. its great . would love to see more.
